Photography and Art

A meaningful photograph or creative piece of art enhances a story in a medium other than words.

News photo

This photograph was taken as art for a news story about the new phone rules in our school. We now have to take lanyards to the bathroom and use E-Hall passes so the school can prevent us from treating a trip to the restroom as an opportunity to meet up with friends. So, in this photo, we staged a scene of a student walking down the hall with her new lanyard, and a text from her friend  telling her to meet up in the bathroom. I love how this photo is focused on the phone and the lanyard, and blurring the lockers in the background. It turned out sharp and crisp, and was a great addition to the news page.

Sports photo

We were experimenting with photos for our first cover of the school year, and although we did not use this photo in our final product, it is still one I am proud of. The previous year our school started a student section called Norsemen Tide. This issue, we were featuring the new heads of the student section group. Here, you can see Cam, one of the news heads, holding up the notorious North flag that is brought to all the sports games. The gray sky and empty stands gives the photo a mysterious mood, which I think sets the tone for the story; 'What will Norsemen Tide do next?'

Cover photo

This photo was the cover of our Senior Issue last school year. Every year, our last issue is dedicated to the graduating seniors. The class of 2022 began our student section, called The Norsemen Tide, a noteworthy accomplishment. So, we used the Norsemen Tide flag in this cover to represent a large part of that school. Taking this photograph was so much fun. Our mascot and I were running around taking photos on the football field, in the front of the school, and in all other kinds of places, until we finally landed on the perfect location. I love the green bushes in the background, as they complement our mascot and the flag.  My favorite part about this photo is how the arch says "Grosse Pointe North," but the North flag is covering the word "North," making it a perfect match up.

Sports photo

It was a cold night for the North vs. South rivalry football game, but I was bundled up shooting pictures from the sidelines. This was the first sports game I photographed from the sidelines and it was so exhilarating to be right next to all the action. This was one of my favorite photos that I took that night. It is sharp and clear, which is often difficult to achieve in a moving action shot.

Editorial Cartoon

Our EdBoard editorial this issue was about our wealth rivalry with Grosse Pointe South. It was based off an article written in South's newspaper in 1994, discussing how North is the wealthier and prioritized school in the district. But now, South is seen that way. This cartoon depicts South dreaming about North in 1994, and now in 2022 North is dreaming about south and all their wealth and luxury. This was my first ever piece of hand drawn art published in the paper, and, for someone who is not an artist, I am very proud of how it turned out and what I created.

News Infographic

This news infographic accompanied the news story I wrote about Hurricane Ian. I specifically designed it to fill the page from top to bottom, so I filled it with numerous facts. As I was adding the information, I realized I could turn it into a "By the Numbers" graphic, so I made the numbers the focus of the design. I love how this piece of art turned out. I also included a QR code at the bottom for our readers to donate to a Hurricane Ian relief fund, which gives this infographic a piece of importance.
